Writing Concept
What is it about?
Here's the simplified breakdown of concepts:
Theme: The central idea or message explored in a story, representing the deeper meaning or moral. It's the "why" behind the story and often reflects universal truths or insights into human nature.
Plot: The sequence of events that make up the storyline, involving the actions and decisions of the characters. It's the "what happens" in the story and typically follows a structure of The hero’s journey.
Story: The broader narrative framework that includes the plot, characters, setting, themes, and emotional journey of the work. It encompasses everything that unfolds within the story, providing context and depth to the plot events and thematic exploration.
What is it for?
Understanding the differences between Theme, Plot, and Story will help you write stories that can effectively communicate resonant themes to your audience, thus, enabling your work to establish a connection between the consumer and the product.
Exercise & Practical Example
In this exercise, you must:
Watch a movie.
Define what the story is about.
Determine the main theme.
Here's an example of the exercise done by us:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Analysis by Albán Brothers
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde follows the story of Dr. Jekyll, a man of high society who manages to create a potion that can separate his evil side, Mr. Hyde, which he can enjoy until it slowly spirals out of control.
The main theme of the story is the exploration of how each of us carries within us both goodness and pure evil. It serves as a critique of substances like alcohol, which can unlock our darker side, and when consumed excessively, can endanger our lives as we lose control over both aspects of our nature.
Movie Recommendation.
"Children of Men" 2006: This sci-fi epic from Alfonso Cuaron imagines a future world that has fallen into anarchy on the heels of an infertility defect in the population that has made humankind face the likelihood of its own extinction.
