The Embryo
April 16, 2024
Writing Concept
What is it about?
The embryo is an element introduced at the beginning of a story, referring to an object, idea, concept, or character that will grow and trigger a reaction by the end of the story.
What is it for?
It serves as a foundation for the narrative, planting a seed that will develop over time and shape the story's outcome, creating a sense of cohesion and impact within the narrative.
Every detail matters. The embryo will help you develop elements that contribute to the plot and are neither superfluous nor banal.
Exercise & Practical Example
In this exercise, you must:
Watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (or another movie)
Identify the Embryo.
Write down the events in which this element appears.
Write down how it helps the story.
For example - In the first act of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (spoilers ahead), we are presented with Felix Felicis, the luck potion, which helps fulfill the goals of whoever consumes it and which would be awarded to the best potion-maker in the class.
Our protagonist, Harry Potter, and his best friend, Ron Weasley, arrive late to class and are left with the last two books, one new and one old, and they must decide who will take the used book. Harry ends up with the old book. Luckily for him, the old book contains numerous magical recipes and secrets that help Harry win the competition and, therefore, the much-desired luck potion.
Later, we are reminded of the existence of this potion when Harry drops its contents into Ron's pumpkin juice before a Quidditch match. Ron thanks Harry when finding out. With newfound courage and luck from the potion, Ron performs exceptionally well. However, during the team's victory celebration, Harry reveals that he never actually used the potion but only made Ron believe everything would be fine.
Finally, Harry decides to use the potion to approach Professor Horace Slughorn and get him to reveal the secret that made Harry's enemy and dark wizard, Voldemort, invincible and immortal.
Movie Recommendation.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" 2003: Blacksmith Will Turner must team up with eccentric pirate “Captian” Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor’s daughter, before she gets sacrificed after Jack’s former cursed pirate allies kidnapped her in cold blood.
